University challenge: Princess Eugenie has a friend to hold her hand on her first day as a fresher at Newcastle University

It can be the most daunting day of a teenager's life - starting university and living away from home for the first time.

But Princess Eugenie was one fresher taking it all in her stride.

The Queen's granddaughter looked happy and relaxed as she made her way to an induction session at Newcastle University today.

No nerves: If Eugenie had any first day jitters, they didn't show as she happily strolled to a student induction session clutching her notes

While Freshers' Week can be an awkward mix of mumbled introductions and getting to know complete strangers, Eugenie, 19, showed no sign of nerves.

It would seem she has had no trouble making new friends - she was seen laughing and chatting and walking hand-in-hand with one of her fellow freshers.

In plimsolls, black tights, a dark dress and cardigan and sporting trendy wristbands and a blue bag, Eugenie said she'd chosen to study in Newcastle because 'it's a great city'.

Eugenie's new friend rivalled her Royal sidekick in the student style stakes with a blue mini-dress, black tights and fashionable ankle boots, topping it off with a grey cardigan and vibrant purple scarf.

Eugenie will leave her Royal residence behind and live in £96-a-w! eek halls of residence accommodation.

Just like her fellow students, she will have a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, single bed, wardrobe, desk and chest of drawers. She will share a living room and kitchen with five others.

Unlike her fellow students, however, she will be followed by royal protection officers.

The university has proved popular with students from public school backgrounds in recent years, and cut-glass accents are regularly heard in parts of the city along with Geordie voices.

Dan Coverdale, editor of the Courier student newspaper, said: 'Maybe she has come up with quite a few friends from her school.

'I think the attraction is that it's a good city up north and it is something different but you do get! quite a lot of southern students.

'There is a great social life here but the academic side of it is good too.'

Eugenie will take a three-year combined studies degree in English Literature, History of Art and Politics.

She gained the highest A-level grades of any member of th! e Royal Family last summer, achieving As in English and Art, and a B in History of Art at Marlborough College in Wiltshire.

She then went travelling with friends.

A student survey last year named Newcastle as the best city to live in and it is widely known for its lively night life with hundreds of pubs, clubs and bars.
